The Ethology

Ethology is the science which studies animals normal behaviour in freedom. As the definition states, the animal behaviour in freedom is normal, i.e. they don't experience behavioural problems in their wild life.

Nowadays, however, and due to domestication, we find dogs and cats living with us, fed and bred by us, while they offer us a complete company, in a reciprocal mutualism. This lead us -or them- to suffer from cohabitation typical problems. Cohabitation which, despite it dates from thousands of years is pretty far from being ideal for the 3 species which take our attention: Mankind, dog and cat.

Most of behavioural problems in dogs and cats are based on the misunderstanding or communication lack between humans and animals. We ve got animals, we enjoy living with them, but we don't understand how they behave and why. We are not aware that if we make an effort to understand them, we d enjoy more. Ethology is the way to learn to understand and listen to them. And we the professionals, are the ideal media to deliver this science to you, the owner.

In my professional experience as clinical veterinary, animal and clients study made me get interested more and more in this relationship, and it took me to specialize in animal behaviour, the area I currently work in. The main interest in my daily work aims at prevention, based on information and advising owners about their pets behaviour. This could lead us, in a future, to understand each other better and to avoid behavioural problems.

I´m also a member of AEPE (Spanish Association for the Dog Study and Environment) board, whose chairman gave me the opportunity to learn everything I know about Ethology. The main objectives of this association are studying, training and collaborating.
